What kind of watch this is

John Musker directs a 91-minute animated fantasy where a street urchin and a princess fall for each other, complicated by a magic lamp and a villain who wants both. Robin Williams voices the Genie, turning a magical servant into a one-man comedy show that drowns out the plot. The film runs on high energy and pop-culture references, treating the classic genie trope as a license for absolute chaos. It is less a romance than a spectacle, built on the idea that wishes are dangerous and the Genie is the only one who knows it.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 96% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, with an average rating of 8.4/10 from December 2024. Metacritic assigns it 86/100 as of January 2026, citing universal acclaim. Janet Maslin of The New York Times noted children "needn't know precisely what Mr. Williams is evoking to understand how funny he is." Brian Lowry of Variety called the magic carpet "its most remarkable accomplishment." Roger Ebert, however, found the leads "pale and routine" and criticized ethnic stereotypes.

How it did with audiences

It cost $28 million and took in $217 million in the United States, with a worldwide total of $504 million. That made it the most successful film of 1992 domestically. On TMDB, users rate it 7.7 out of 10.

Where it left its mark

The Genie role shifted how Hollywood approached animated voice casting. Robin Williams’s performance helped establish the idea that a film star’s name could anchor an animated feature. Entertainment writer Scott Meslow noted that audiences responded more to Williams’s Genie than to Aladdin himself, viewing the genie as Disney’s most marketable character. This dynamic, Meslow argued, led to the "celebrification" of later films like Shark Tale and Puss in Boots. It changed the business model.
