Critics found the tension real, even if the horror felt familiar. Rotten Tomatoes reports 86% positive reviews out of 281, while Metacritic settles on a 68, which signals generally favorable reception. The consensus highlights Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn, grounding the chaos in raw humanity. Peter Bradshaw called it "an efficient, if familiar, spectacle of suspense" in The Guardian. Not everyone bought the premise. Peter Debruge in Variety noted the film spends most of its time "tiptoeing through a mostly off-screen apocalypse". That might be a safety feature, or just a lot of walking.
How it did with audiences
The film took in $138.9 million in the United States and Canada and $122.9 million elsewhere, totaling $261.8 million worldwide. Deadline Hollywood pegged the net profit at $83.6 million. It opened to $52.2 million, the best weekend for the franchise, aided by heat waves and a 66% same-day ticket purchase rate. On TMDB, users rate it 6.6 out of 10. Audiences turned out in numbers that made the math work.
