What kind of watch this is
Jared Hess directs this 101-minute family fantasy, and the tagline "Be there and be square" might be the only honest piece of marketing you will ever see. Jason Momoa and Jack Black play Garrett and Steve, a duo whose chemistry is as rigid as the blocky world they inhabit. The film is a cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination, or at least it tries to. If you can enjoy a movie where the physics are equally dull and the stakes are equally flat, it is a decent way to pass a Tuesday evening.
What the critics said
The critics were lukewarm. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 47% as of October 2025, while Metacritic gives it 45 out of 100. The consensus notes it is a colorful sandbox for Jack Black and Jason Momoa to romp around in. Jesse Hassenger of IGN called the result "conceptually muddy". Others found the story confusing, a complaint the actors’ energy seemed to distract from. The audience disagreed. CinemaScore polled viewers and gave it a "B+". Kids rated it 5 out of 5 stars. The film pleased the people it was actually for.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $150 million. It made $424.1 million in North America and $537.1 million elsewhere, totaling $961.2 million worldwide. That’s a return of over 6x, which usually settles the argument about whether audiences care about blockbusters. TMDB users give it a 6.2. The math is clear; the taste is subjective.
