What kind of watch this is

Gore Verbinski directs a 146-minute trip into a Swiss Alpine spa that feels less like a vacation and more like a fever dream. Dane DeHaan plays Lockhart, an executive who arrives to fetch his boss and stays for reasons the town politely refuses to explain. Jason Isaacs runs the place with a smile that never quite reaches his eyes, while Mia Goth plays Hannah, a nurse whose kindness looks suspiciously like a trap. The film trades jump scares for a creeping sense that the water itself is judging you. It is a long, damp wait for a punchline that may not land.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 42%, a number that suggests the film is a bit more ambitious than it is coherent. Metacritic lands on 47, which it files under mixed or average. Critics praised the visuals and the cast, then flagged the length. A.O. Scott called it the work of a manic cinephile, which is a compliment that hurts. Justin Chang found the terrors beautiful, but arbitrary. The consensus is that the style outshines the story.

How it did with audiences

Against a $40 million production budget, A Cure for Wellness pulled in $8.1 million in the United States and Canada. International markets added $18.4 million, bringing the worldwide total to $26.5 million. The opening weekend was a $4.2 million stumble, placing it 10th at the box office. Then came the second weekend. Theaters pulled the film from 97.8% of screens, leaving it playing in just 88 locations. That is a rapid exit for a movie that cost more to make than it earned.

What came next for the cast

Jason Isaacs stepped out of the wizarding world into Hotel Mumbai and The White Lotus. Mia Goth moved from Everest to X, then Frankenstein. Dane DeHaan left Spider-Man behind for Oppenheimer and ZeroZeroZero. Harry Groener joined them in Oppenheimer. The credits list what came after. They do not explain why.
