What kind of watch this is

Ron Howard directs a 135-minute drama that treats brilliance as a liability. Russell Crowe plays John Nash, a man whose mind works faster than his social graces. The film tracks his descent from academic promise to a harrowing, self-discovering fall. It is not a warm romance, despite the genre tag; it is a cold, mathematical dissection of a life gone wrong.

What the critics said

Critics mostly liked it, though not unanimously. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 74% approval with an average of 7.2/10. Metacritic lands on 72, which counts as generally favorable. Roger Ebert gave it four stars. Mike Clark of USA Today called it a welcome follow-up to How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Not everyone agreed. Desson Thomson of The Washington Post found it "one of those formulaically rendered Important Subject movies". The math community, including John Nash himself, praised the portrayal.

How it did with audiences

A $58 million gamble that returned $314 million worldwide is a strong showing by any standard. It started slow, sitting at #12 during its limited run, before climbing to #2 once it went wide. Audiences seem to have liked the math, giving it a 7.9 TMDB user score and an 8.2/10 on IMDb as of February 2026.

Awards

A Beautiful Mind took home 5 awards from 8 nominations. The 2002 Oscars were generous, handing the trophy to Brian Grazer for Best Picture, Ron Howard for Best Director, Jennifer Connelly for Best Supporting Actress, and Akiva Goldsman for the adapted screenplay. It also swept the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association Award for Best Film. The math checks out, mostly.

What came next for the cast

Russell Crowe stepped from L.A. Confidential into the gladiator’s arena, then later into the cape of Man of Steel. Jennifer Connelly moved from the gritty despair of Requiem for a Dream to the sleek future of Alita: Battle Angel. Ed Harris went from the confined set of The Truman Show to the endless train of Snowpiercer. The credits list these shifts, but they cannot prove this film caused them. They can only say what came next.
