9-1-1: Lone Star (2020)

Tough enough for Texas.

Nearly 20 years ago, Owen Strand was the lone survivor of his Manhattan firehouse on 9/11. In the wake of the attack, Owen had the unenviable task of rebuilding his station. After a similar tragedy happens to a firehouse in Austin, Owen, along with his troubled firefighter son, T.K., takes his progressive philosophies of life and firefighting down to Texas, where he helps them start anew. On the surface, Owen is all about big-city style and swagger, but underneath he struggles with a secret he hides from the world - one that could very well end his life.

What kind of watch this is

9-1-1: Lone Star takes the procedural engine of its parent show and swaps the skyline for the Texas Hill Country. It is 53 hours of watching Rob Lowe try to be a larger-than-life hero while quietly fighting a battle no one else can see. The drama leans hard into the swagger, treating the Austin firehouse as a place where big-city confidence meets small-town secrets. It plays out like a long, noisy argument between two men who love each other but cannot agree on how to live. The stakes are high, the pacing is brisk, and the emotional core is surprisingly fragile for a show about blowing up buildings.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes gives the first season a 77% approval rating based on 13 reviews, with an average score of 6.8 out of 10. Metacritic lands on a weighted average of 67 out of 100, a mark it files under generally favorable. Daniel D'Addario of Variety notes the show is solid, even if its conceit is "at times so utopian as to defy belief." Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter calls it a "solid franchise companion" that serves character studies, an admirable goal not always smoothly executed. Sean O'Neal of Texas Monthly pushed back, finding the Austin setting baffling for a conservative backdrop.

How it did with audiences

On TMDB, users rate it 8.1 out of 10. Fox gave the series a two-night debut after the NFC Championship game in January 2020. That opening pulled in 11.5 million viewers with a 3.2 rating among adults 18–49. By January 2022, a new episode drew 4.86 million viewers and a 0.6 demo rating. The final season averaged 7.1 million multi-platform viewers over a 35-day window, ranking 69th for the 2024–2025 season. Broadcast alone saw an average of 2.813 million viewers per episode. The numbers cooled, but the series held its ground.
