What kind of watch this is
(500) Days of Summer is a 2009 romantic comedy that refuses to be a standard love story. Directed by Marc Webb, it runs 95 minutes. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Tom, a greeting card writer who views romance through a lens of idealized fantasy. Zooey Deschanel is Summer. The film dissects the gap between romantic expectation and reality with a light, pop-infused tone. It is a precise study of how two people can love each other and still fail to build a life together. The ending lands with the quiet finality of a door closing.
What the critics said
Critics largely agreed on the quality, though they measured it in different ways. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 85% Tomatometer score as of August 2024, alongside a 7.6 average from rated reviews in October 2021. Metacritic lists a Metascore of 76 as of July 2025. Roger Ebert called it "a delightful comedy, alive with invention," noting the surprise of a film that tells you the ending first. Peter Travers found it "honest," saying it takes a piece out of you.
How it did with audiences
The film cost $8 million to make and took in $61 million worldwide. In the US, it grossed $32 million. Fox Searchlight initially flagged its UK opening as a success, noting it earned half what District 9 did in five days. That early optimism for a "breakout indie hit" didn't quite materialize, but the numbers still held up. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10. It did the math, and the math worked.
What came next for the cast
Gordon-Levitt traded Beethoven for Inception. Deschanel swapped Bridge to Terabithia for New Girl. Moretz stepped out of The Amityville Horror into Kick-Ass. Arend moved from Super Troopers to Madam Secretary. The timeline suggests momentum, but credits do not prove causality. Sometimes a film is just a door that happens to be open.
Where it left its mark
The film’s reputation settled into a specific kind of misreading. By the 10th anniversary, Entertainment Weekly sat down with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel to untangle the viewer’s habit of casting Summer as the villain. She is honest throughout, Gordon-Levitt clarified. Tom, however, projects fantasies onto her. He falls for the idea, not the person. It is a warning against sympathizing with the delusional narrator.
