The consensus calls it a simple-minded but visually exciting experience. Roger Ebert gave it 2 out of 4 stars, noting the one-dimensional caricatures who talk like professional wrestlers.
How it did with audiences
$65 million in, $456 million out. The math works. On TMDB, users give it a 7.2. It opened to $70.8 million in North America, breaking the March record held by Ice Age: The Meltdown. Studio heads were pleasantly shocked the numbers doubled their expectations. They credited Queen Gorgo and a MySpace campaign for pulling in crowds. Word spread, even if the plot didn’t always travel as fast.
Awards
The film took home 4 awards, including the Saturn Award for Best Director, which Zack Snyder accepted. It also picked up the Saturn Award for Best Action or Adventure Film and the Satellite Award for Best Visual Effects, the latter going to Chris Watts. The MTV Movie Awards gave it the nod for Best Fight, specifically Leonidas battling the Über Immortal.
What came next for the cast
Lena Headey stepped from period dramas into the throne room of Westeros. David Wenham traded Middle-earth for the Caribbean. Gerard Butler kept swinging. The 2007 release did not build these paths. It merely sat in the middle of them, while the actors chased different kinds of spectacle.
