What kind of watch this is

David Slade’s 2007 horror thriller turns the polar night into a siege. The town loses the sun for 30 days, and the vampires arrive right on cue. It is 113 minutes of escalating dread, anchored by Josh Hartnett and Melissa George as the sheriff couple holding the line. Danny Huston plays Marlow. The film trades jump scares for the slow, crushing weight of darkness closing in. It is a grim, atmospheric endurance test.

What the critics said

The reviews split, which is a tidy way to describe mediocrity. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 50% as of November 2024, based on 156 reviews. Metacritic lands on 53 out of 100 as of November 2025, a score it files under mixed or average. The consensus is that the film offers thrills but succumbs to erratic execution. Roger Ebert gave it 2.5 stars, calling Danny Huston "quite convincing" as the vampire leader. He found the acting plausible, even if the plot holes were not.

What came next for the cast

Josh Hartnett moved from Pearl Harbor to Oppenheimer, a jump that defies simple chronology. Melissa George shifted from Grey's Anatomy to The Good Wife, trading one medical procedural for another legal one. Danny Huston went from Children of Men to Wonder Woman. Ben Foster appeared in The Punisher before Hell or High Water. These credits do not prove the 2007 film caused the trajectory. They merely mark where each actor was when the vampire movie happened.
