What kind of watch this is

Sam Mendes directed 1917, a 119-minute war drama set during the First World War. The hook is the clock. Time is the enemy, as the tagline warns. Two young British soldiers, played by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, must cross enemy territory to deliver a message that stops a deadly attack on hundreds of troops. Mark Strong appears as Captain Smith. The film moves with the urgency of a ticking bomb, keeping the audience locked in the soldiers' path.

What the critics said

Critics largely agreed on the spectacle, though not always on the soul. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 88% approval rating based on 472 reviews, with an average score of 8.4/10 as of July 2024. Metacritic’s metascore sits at 78 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews. The consensus highlights the immersive, one-take technical achievement. Kate Erbland of IndieWire counted it among the best of 2019. Justin Chang of NPR found the continuous take style "as distracting as it is immersive." Manohla Dargis of The New York Times argued the sanitization turned catastrophe into preening showmanship. The artifice may overwhelm the intent, but the machinery hums.

How it did with audiences

The film cost $95 million to make and took in $385 million worldwide. In the United States, it earned $159 million. Deadline Hollywood calculated the net profit at $77 million. On TMDB, users rate it 8 out of 10. Audiences did the math, and the studio followed.

Awards

Roger Deakins, Mark Taylor, and Guillaume Rocheron took home Academy Awards for cinematography, sound, and visual effects. Sam Mendes won the Golden Globe for Best Director, while the film itself took the Drama prize. It also swept the BAFTAs with 7 wins. Critics named it a top 10 film of the year, which is a nice way to end a war story.
