13 Going on 30 is a 2004 comedy fantasy romance that runs 98 minutes. It hinges on a specific kind of wish: skipping the awkward years to land on the good ones. Jennifer Garner plays Jenna, who wakes up thirty with the body and job she always wanted. The catch is that the life she dreamed of turns out to be hollow. Gary Winick directs a story that knows exactly how much we all pretend adulthood is just a better version of childhood. It is a film about the gap between the fantasy of growing up and the reality of it.

Rotten Tomatoes shows a 64% approval rating as of November 2024, while Metacritic lands on a 57/100 Metascore as of October 2025. That is the territory of mixed or average reception. The consensus leans on Jennifer Garner. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly called it "the rare commercial comedy that leaves you entranced." Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle found Garner "a charming, abandoned comedian." Not everyone bought the premise. Mick Martin and Marsha Porter called it a "shameless rip-off" of Big. They did appreciate the spark.
What came next for the cast
Jennifer Garner moved from Pearl Harbor to Juno, a shift that defies simple cause. Mark Ruffalo went from The Last Castle to The Avengers, a trajectory that seems almost too tidy. Andy Serkis left Lord of the Rings to join Star Wars. The credits list what happened, not why.
